Stop at the full stop

The skill

Pause for one beat after each sentence.

A beat of silence after each sentence lets the listener finish processing it before the next one starts.

  1. 1Mark every full stop in the script with a slash before you read.
  2. 2Read it, and stay silent for one beat at every slash. Count "one" in your head.
  3. 3Use each pause to breathe in, so the silence feels planned.
Coach tips
  • Listen back for: a clear gap of about one second after each sentence, with no filler in it.
  • Common mistake: rushing straight into the next sentence. Count one silently before you continue.
